Malo Malo: Salsa Party!

A steamy night of hot live mambo and Latin swing with salsa sensation Malo Malo. Following their spectacular return in May after a long absence, they have thrilled audiences at the club once a month and they’re back at Foundry 616 for their last winter gig.

MALO MALO’s leader, Danny G Felix,  formed the band in 2013, based on the classic live New York (nuyorican) sound—musically complex but with raw energy and dance grooves – was at last brought to Australia.

Inspiration for the band came from Danny’s visits to Colombia, USA and Cuba, including playing in New York with greats such as Jimmy Bosch, Ray de la Paz and Pete Nater. Danny had already attracted attention on the world salsa scene based on tracks from his Danny G Felix Project album (Elegwa 2011).

In Sydney, he recruited lead percussionist Dominic Kirk, recently returned from a year in Cuba where he placed second in the prestigious Fiesta del Tambor. Dominic brings to Malo Malo his prodigious talent, fire and a deep understanding of the music.  Haling from Peru, vocalist Richard Valdez is also essential to Malo Malo. Richie is known for his engaging and energetic stage presence as well as an authentic salsa singing style reminiscent of the great Fania singers. Bassist and 2IC Sal “Salsatore” Santoro is one of the most experienced and respected latin musicians in Sydney.   The two trombones are also an irreplaceable feature of this music, and Mike Raper and Benn Chapman play brilliantly as a section—complimenting and bouncing off each other.

Danny, Dom and Mike had played together previously in Son Veneno – all are professionals of many years experience, with great energy and musicality.

Since it debuted, Malo Malo has been chosen to perform as the only live band at the annual Salsa Paladium Spectacular, one of the biggest salsa events in Australia, as well as a prime-time slot on the main stage stage at the famous Darling Harbour Latin Fiesta.

With a repertoire which includes originals as well as classics, based on the 1960’s cuban sound and 1970’s New York Fania sound, Malo Malo appeals not only to salsa dancers, but to jazz and soul listeners, and to anyone who appreciates great melodies, complex rhythms and a powerful live sound.

After the recent release of their first EP, Malo malo is now being played in Salsa clubs and on radio stations all around the world. Their first single ‘Tombula’ was chosen as song of the week on the influencial Colombian DJ El Chino’s Solar Latin Club which is one of the most well known and important websites for new salsa in the world.
